Great places - Shaba National reserve

Deep in the arid northern part of Kenya, situated across the Great North Road, is Shaba National Reserve which forms part of a trio of reserves quite different from the ones found in Kenya. Shaba takes its name from Mount Shaba (1525 metres), a volcanic mountain that became extinct around 5,000 years ago and lies on the border of the reserve. The area is private, hot, and visually stimulating on many levels.

This is one of Kenya’s most exclusive game reserve, and is situated next to the Ewaso Ngiro River which flows for 34 kilometres along its northern boundary and there are also 17 natural springs, a magnet for game in a region that experiences just 300 millimetres of rainfall per annum.  A few of the highlights of this area are the regular sightings of elephant and lion and you have a good chance of seeing Kenya's 'northern five'; oryx, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Grevy's zebra and lesser kudu. . Shaba is also a birdwatchers paradise with hundreds of species

Despite its diminutive size Shaba punches well above its weight and is dominated by a sense of scale that most people simply don't get to experience.

On a clear day, Ol Olokwe is visible to the north west. This sacred mountain of the latter-day explorer stands at the southern end of the Matthews Range, an icon of adventure, gateway to Kenya's wild Northern Frontier District

In the centre of the Shaba the Ewaso N'giro River provides welcome contrast, having tumbled out of Laikipia on its way from the foothills of Mt Kenya. It flows thick and brown under the granite hills, its banks lined with large mature fig trees and dense stands of palms trees. Massive crocs bask on sand banks and game of all kinds is drawn to the rich riparian woodland.

Reticulated GiraffeThis little place has also earned herself a place in Hollywood's hall of fame. Known as the Born Free Country , it is here that renowned author and conservationist Joy Adamson spent her final moments, reintegrating a young leopard and lion back into the world. it was the perfect backdrop to the movie Born Free by Virginia Mckeena and her late husband. It also hosted the cast of the world acclaimed motion picture, Out of Africa which chronicled the lives of Karen Blixen and her lovers. it has also hosted participants in Survivor series.
