1 DAY EXCURSIONS - MWEA NATIONAL PARK

Elephant at the park
Mwea national park, was Gazetted in 1976 covering an area northwest of kamburu dam at the confluence of Tana river and Thiba river. Two islands within kamburu dam constructed in 1976 are in the protected area. Mwea the only protected area in which the globally threatened and Kenya edemic hindes babbler is known to occur.

Although a distance from Nairobi and Nyeri, we know you will delight in this excursion despite the traveling and an early departure. This small reserve, 42 sq km ,is essentially undeveloped and undisturbed and because of its location rarely visited by tourists, consequently you will find it a place of calm and tranquillity enabling you to view the reserves of plentiful wildlife in perfect peace. One other reason for its scarcity of visitors is the road network within the reserve is rough terrain and only accessible by a suitable 4WD vehicle, we at Oloi Travel will provide such a vehicle for you to enjoy this really wild experience.

The vegetation is rolling woodland, thick bush and scattered trees, unlike the reserves of the open plains where game is relatively easy to find here a keen eye is needed, a true African experience. Amongst the wildlife you can expect to see include good numbers of elephant, Mwea provides an ideal habitat for them.

The Major wildlife attractions include the elephants, Rothschild giraffes, Common zebras, Lesser kudu, Buffalo, Water Buck, Bush buck, Impala, Vervet Monkeys, Aardvark, Yellow baboons, Grants gazelle, Dik dik, Cape hare, Warthog, Black backed jackal, Duiker, Sykes monkeys, Genet cat, Slender mongoose, Stripped ground squirrel, Dwarf mongoose, Crested porcupine, Rock Hyrax, Tree Hyrax and tortoise. Hippos and crocodiles are also found in the dams and rivers. Different birds and reptile species have been recorded in the reserve.

A large part of reserves boundary is formed by the Kamburu Reservoir which is home to abundant hippo and crocodile. For the ornithologist Mwea is renowned for it’s water birds and waders owing to the reservoir and it’s proximity to nearby rice fields. Resident rarities include Hinde’s babbler, Pel’s fishing owl and white-backed night heron. The day excursion provided by Oloi Travels will include transport for the day in a 4WD vehicle, reserve entry, picnic lunch and the services of a KWS ranger if required.
