Geographically, Nyeri lies in the Nyeri valley saddled by Mount Kenya to the East and the Aberdare ranges to the West. The town originated from an offer made in 1899 by the then ruler of Nyeri Wango'mbe wa Ihura to Mr Francis Hall, who requested for a site to Build a Boma (administrativ centre) The place was called " Nyere Ria Magoto" where the town now stands.
The site selected for the town was on a ridge sprawling down from the present Nyeri Golf Club house to the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital. The ridge was unihabited but thickly covered by species of tussock grass including the kikuyu thatching grass mogutu, and scattered thickets of rugoko a grass of the graminae family which grows a cylindrical stem about a centimeter thick and usually six inches to one foot long. the Kikuyu made arrows by fixing arrow heads to the durable stems of the rugoko. The station itself attained its first name from the splendid scenic view of the blossoming mogutu. The partly greeen brownish tassels when scorched by the tropical sun presented a magnificent mirage reffered to as Nyere
