This is a lush indigenous forest at the foothills of Mt. The forest is also a vital corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to Mount Kenya, and one which elephants have been using for centuries.

There are many activities to do when in the forest. You will discover

It also has a walkway ending at a wooden platform 30ft. high, where you can relax and enjoy a view of the river from this elevated vantage point and enjoy the Elephants and buffaloes which frequently come here to drink and wallow.
Campsites near flowing water where you can enjoy camping out in the wilds of the forest. Equipped with clean running water, a toilet and a bathroom, well trained guides who can take you on informative and fun filled camping that must be always    accompanied by an armed ranger.

OF ELEPHANTS

We were going to discover this place at all costs. I have heard about it for far too long and the fact that it is in the laikipia plateau made it all the more worthwhile. I have seen the photos and fantasized forever but other than that is within me the secret prayer of meeting up with elephants.
Well its 4pm. We have asked directions but google maps was the real winner on this one. We have been going for almost an hour and are about to give up when we notice the sign on the stone. And in we go.....
What happened was probably the best thing that has happened this year for me. We run into a herd of Elephants. This is not one of those things you see on national geographic or see in a picture book. This is the real real thing...real life down to the very grass they are stepping on. My oh my the kids are squeeling in the back of the car...my husband has turned into a professional photographer/driver and my phone has turned into a camera.
There is a feeling here of pure Africa in the beasts face...its beautiful this creature... i think it has been underated. ....wow simply wow

Am looking at this animal and telling myself i am lucky as the the African bush elephant is the largest land animal, reacheing up to 24 feet in length and 13 feet in height. It is the largest of the three elephant species and can weigh up to 11 tons and live up to 70 years, longer than any other mammal except humans. Imagine that sitting on you.......... This  african bush elephant is a herbivores and need to eat about 350 pounds of vegetation daily. (of this am rather glad. Being surrounded like that by any carnivore is akin to being in a horror movie)

In addition to two prominent tusks, which are present in both sexes, the elephant is characterized by its two large ears, pillar like legs, thickset body and a large head with a muscular, mobile trunk. The trunk is a strong appendage, with more than 40,000 muscles and tendons. Its sensitive tip ends in two finger-like projections, which can manipulate small objects. The trunk can lift some seriously heavy stuff....maybe our car....that would be so totally cool. Water is sucked up through the trunk and then blown into the mouth for a drink or onto the back as a cooling mist.

We have noticed that this herd is made up of females and one young which indeed is how it should be. Did you know they are managed by the eldest female, called the matriarch. The adult male elephant rarely joins a herd and leads a solitary life, only approaching herds during mating season. Females give birth to a single calf after 22 months of gestation, the longest gestation period among mammals.

i am going to sleep well tonight i can see and hope for more action tommorrow...all caught on camera.

of cows and things and people - towards community

Part of our packages designed for you include:

ADVENTURE FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE: designed to help you discover your passions and greatest talents, overcome fears and limiting beliefs, build authentic connections with other people and provide practical tools and strategies to create a life aligned with a higher purpose

Now. Today we took it a notch higher off the normal safari routes. We visited a cow. She was cute...taking photos and sticking out her tongue like that. Sometimes we take that little detour and attend to community. From milking cows to participating in tea and coffee harvesting to playing with kids or simply being a part time teacher or art teacher what ever your heart desires.
Going back to the good looking gal in the pic....well she belongs to a group of 10 cows all pregnant at the moment and two calves being taken care of by the Pamoja Tuinuke women group which consists of over 800 people divided into 37 groups. The women are amazingly capable of picking an idea and running with it. Building themselves from little capital and doing something with their lives.

Did i happen to mention that this are the cleanest cows i have ever come across? Well they really are. My group of guys and gals (not the cows) were very happy to be part and parcel of this community outreach. It does feel nice to participate in the day to day activities that make life go round in this part of the world.

Under our social wellness dimension, we follow the following tenets
  • It is better to contribute to the common welfare of a community than to think only of ourselves.
  • It is better to live in harmony with others and our environment than to live in conflict with them.
Oloi will give you the opportunity to actively participate in and contribute to the common welfare of a different community, meet with people from diverse backgrounds, learn how they live, their cultures and their traditions. Through our community arm INSPIRE, you will be able to interact with the community and help in the way you feel is best for example educate a child or help a community library which leaves you fulfilled and enlightened at a different level while you make a difference in the world.

Next time perhaps we will be able to do a bit of fish farming and real farming as well.....definitely worth coming back to.
